The words "bossa nova" are often synonymous with the name Stan Getz. But North Americans might not have ever known the bright sound of bossa nova had it not been for Charlie Byrd. In 1961 Byrd returned from a tour of South America, where bossa nova music was thriving. The style was the invention of singer Joao Gilberto and songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim — an adaptation of infectious Brazilian samba rhythms with the harmonic structures and "cool" surface of West Coast jazz. Byrd brought back records for Getz to hear, they planned a session, and the result was Jazz Samba — the first album of true bossa nova music by jazz artists and the one that broke the bossa nova wave in 1960s America.

Verve Records/UMe and Third Man Records have partnered to resurrect the popular reissue series, Verve By Request, with a vinyl twist. Focusing on rare gems and fan-requested jazz albums from the Verve Label Group's stable of iconic labels, the series will offer two titles per month — each hand-picked by Verve and Third Man Records. The records will include both long-out-of-print titles from the vault as well as the first-ever vinyl pressings for albums released in the '90s and aughts that were only originally released on CD.

Albums will be newly remastered from original analog sources, when available, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man Record Pressings in Detroit.

In her first recording for Verve, Blossom Dearie showcased her first-class piano playing and sense of swing on this self-titled 1957 gem. Dearie surveys the Great American Songbook on standouts such as "Deed I Do," "Thou Swell," and three songs sung in French! Verve By Request Series features transfers from the analog tapes remastered on 180-gram vinyl.

It is undeniable that Billie Holiday's singing changed in her later years. Her voice darkened and shifted to a lower range. Her economy of means distilled her sound to its expressive essence — a kind of heightened speech. The classic LP Songs For Distingue Lovers has also deepened and become burnished with time. Maybe it's that still-arresting word, "distingue"; maybe it's that iconic, tinted image of Lady Day on the cover. But now that legendary LP, with the singer's best studio work of the Fifties, is available through the Acoustic Sounds Series.

Nina Simone's Wild Is The Wind, from March 1966, and its breathlessly engaging title track, were compiled from several recordings that were left over from sessions for previous albums for Phillips. Scott Yanow of AllMusic says in his 4-Star review of Very Tall: "This first matchup on records between pianist Oscar Peterson and vibraphonist Milt Jackson was so logical that it is surprising it did not occur five years earlier. Originally recorded for Verve and three decades later reissued on this audiophile CD by Mobile Fidelity, the quartet set (which also includes bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen) swings as hard as one might expect. Highlights include 'On Green Dolphin Street,' 'The Work Song,' 'John Brown's Body' (a jam on 'Battle Hymn of the Republic') and 'Reunion Blues.' Soulville is quintessential Ben Webster: intimate, tender, endlessly expressive. Webster was internationally recognized as one of jazz's elder statesman when he recorded this album in 1957, but the you

thful fire that had marked his playing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra two decades earlier was undiminished. Soulville is easily the best of his albums for Verve, with Webster's breathy tones given a fitting accompaniment by Oscar Peterson and his group, then including bassist Ray Brown, guitarist Herb Ellis, and understated drummer Stan Levy. Leading this stellar combo through a program consisting mostly of vintage pop tunes, the great tenor saxophonist is at his peak. Versions of "Lover Come Back To Me" and "Makin' Whoopee" sound excellent, but bluesy originals such as "Last Date" and the title track are truly outstanding. A quality set from start to finish.
